August 2008 BRMC NEWLETTER

Presidents Report

Kamp RnO

Everything aligned perfectly for a wonderful weekend; the weather, the meals, the camaraderie and the wonderful service from our hosst Rick and Owen.  I also want to thank the British Columbia Crew for delivering a great event. The turnout of attendees rivaled the Victoria Day 2008 attendance. The final touch of a fire show and horse back riding capped off unique entertainment around the camp fire.

Call for Artistic Talent (40th Anniversary Insignia)

As the club approaches our 40th anniversary next year, we are asking for members to submit a logo/insignia design to be used for Victoria Day 2009 to commemorate our anniversary. Not too many organizations can claim a milestone as this, and we should all feel proud for participating in our club. If you are interested please contact your club vice president for details and submit a design. A committee is forming to select a final design. At the time of this writing, we have received three submissions.

Club Flag

After being in hiding for some time, the lub flag has been found and it was on display during the July Run and Campout at Kamp RnO. We won’t mention the West Seattle member who was harboring the flag for safekeeping.

Website

The new website has been live for about a month and we have received a lot of positive feedback. Communications are picking up from external clubs and interests and we have received 14 requests from visitors of the website to be added to our mailing list. Also, as I announced during the July 19th, meeting I want to thank Dusty and Justin for stepping forward to assist in the development and launch of this new website. Any comments or suggestions to the website for content, updates, etc are to be directed to your club president.

Members Pictures on the New Website

Some of you were not aware that most all members’ pictures containing your first name and last name (first initial) were posted on the old website. We want to carry this forward into the new website. Since all members were notified in June of these pictures posting launching for August, I have only heard from one member to opt out for their display in the member’s picture section. All remaining members’ pictures will be on active and on or before August 1.

August Run

This run will be to Winlock, Washington at Lewis and Clark State Park. I am looking forward to seeing all of you at this run. See the runs and events section of the website for details.

Road Captains Report

The July Run, when you hear of the stories about this run you’ll be sorry you missed it!  We had the pleasure of being at Rick & Owen’s Kampground near Nanaimo, BC.

Seven of us left Paul’s place Friday for the run which took about an hour and a half to get there.  BC’s highways on Vancouver Island have stop lights for their intersections, instead of overpasses.  This makes it seems like your racing from one stop light to the next, trying to beat the flashing yellow sign saying the light is going to change and get ready to stop.  At one of these intersections our group got split in half.  I was tail gunning so if something like this happened I could get us to the campsite without Paul.  As most of you noticed the roads up there have a lot of black patching which can be slick at times.  James found out the hard way, as he applied a little to much rear brake and the back tire slid just a little bit, but James was able to modulate the brake and brought his bike upright and to a stop. I know he was shaken, but he did a great job of keeping it under control.

James motorcycling ability was tapped again as we where just a half mile from the camp ground.  Paul had us in single file as the road was narrow with big trucks hauling gravel.  As he approached the turn for R&O’s he passed it just a bit and came to a stop.  This sent some of the guys to the left & right of Paul as he did not signal for the stop or turn.  Andre headed far right towards the ditch, and James towards far left, crossing the road towards the other ditch.  Both Andre & James kept their iron steed upright as the dust & gravel flew.  Hugh & I made the turn and stopped on the side and just looked at each other and ask, what happened?  Well, Paul felt real bad for what he did! When leading a group one has to remember that you’ve got motorcyclist behind you and they are not able to respond fast enough without directions.  Remember they can’t read your mind!  For the two new riders, they did a great job of keeping their bikes upright.  I now the guys where a bit upset, but they did let Paul know that they didn’t hold it against him, this is what brothers do! Anyone could have made that mistake!  So the moral of this story, don’t make quick decisions when leading a group and while in a group you always have to be paying attention!  When there are situations like this we need to clear the road as soon as possible, no lingering in the road!

I would like to thank the Ferry Riders for their hospitality this weekend I think we all had a great time!!!!!  Dean one of the Ferry Riders hosted the BBQ with help from the gay community in Comox.   I’m sorry I didn’t go on that day run as we had two to chose from, but I head everyone had a good time!  Thanks Dean for your hard work, there was around 36 very kewl!

I want to thank Paul D. and Bruce M. for being the road captain buddies for this run, they did a fantastic job!

Now that I have very little left to bare, you’ll have to talk to Paul about seeing the rest! Everyone had a blast at R&O’s, even Rick and Owen said that our group is well behaved.  That’s great to hear about the club and that they enjoyed our company!  If you missed this run, I’m sorry!

High Millage, for those that are in the high millage contest, be sure to be at the September run as that is the closing date for the contest.  To participate in this you had to be at the VD Run to give your millage to me. The winner will be announced at the Anniversary party in February!

Runs for next year, start thinking about them as we need to decide by November!  Each city will have a suggestion of places that we’ll vote on.  Try to have as much information on these runs to make it easier to access!  One suggestion on locations to think about, the State Parks around Tribal Casinos some of them serve pretty good food for large groups.  This can make it easier to manage the food for the weekend when we don’t have accommodations like the VD Run or R&O’s Kampground.

I was contacted by The Elks of Tacoma about their Poker Run for Veterans on the 13th of September.  For those interested in participating contact them at www.elksmcrun.com

Our next run 15th to the 17th is to Lewis & Clark State Park by Winlock WA.  We have two day runs planned! Once everyone has registered by the 10th of August I’ll send out the information you need to know and the accommodations!
