Welcome
Border Riders Motorcycle Club (BRMC) is an organized group of guys who like to ride and camp. Our membership spans the Pacific Northwest, with the greatest participation in Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver B.C. We have one of the largest memberships for gay clubs in North America. We welcome like-minded guests to come meet us at our monthly Meet & Greets and to join us at one of our club events and our local activities.

July Recap: Lost Lake
We found it! Yes, after years of it missing from the Border Rider’s ‘must do’ campgrounds, our amazing experiences at Lost Lake has been added to the coveted list of places we will definitely return.
To begin with, Lost Lake is pretty much out in the middle of nowhere. For Dave J who traveled the furthest, it was a total of 472 miles across Oregon and up through Washington nearly to the Canadian border. The closest town on the approach is Tonasket (sounds like basket) which is about 27 miles away. That last 27 miles are jammed pack with paved mountain twisties making the run a dream ride through the heavily forested journey.
Having said that, we are in an open range forest and there was a situation where a momma cow and calf had wondered onto the road. Much confusion and panic on the animal’s part resulted in the group coming to a full stop for several minutes to let the two get back together. Unfortunately, this did not happen, and the calf continued to run down the road in front of us, darting back and forth across causing concern for both our and its safety. Progressing slowly, we were finally able to get around the calf when it finally ran off the road a bit, calling for its mom. Hopefully, they got back together.
Upon arrival to the campground, we were first thrilled to see an expansive group site set under towering trees with an awesome view of the lake. Well prepared flat sites for the tents, picnic tables, and a fire pit added to the comfort level after a hard day’s ride. As a bonus, much to our satisfaction was to find it set well apart from the RV’ers and associate sounds (people noise) thus providing ample privacy and isolation.
The first night being Friday and most of us arriving late in the afternoon, our time was spent setting up camp and feasting on munchies that we had brought with us from town while we relaxed into the evening. Saturday morning came with the sound of loons (and Dave J heard an elk calling from the other side of the lake). Being time for breakfast, we geared up for a short ride down to Bonaparte Lake Resort which Andrew G had scoped out the day before. it was a small, but nice restaurant.
Breakfast at the restaurant, though slow to get served (we give them bonus credit for trying really, really hard to deal with our large group), was excellent! You couldn’t beat the view as picture windows overlooked the lake. After breakfast and with coffee now flowing in our veins, we broke into groups to ride into parts unknown.
Riders began to return to the campground later in the afternoon. Being a very hot day, high on the list of activities was to strip down to our bathing trunks (yeah, a ton of other people and kids were around) and jump into the lake for a cool and refreshing splash. After a bit more relaxing and socializing, we agreed that the place we did breakfast earlier in the day would also be a great place for dinner. So, after we assembled for a group photo down by the lake, a short group meeting, it was off for dinner.

We had the actual club meeting after we got back from dinner. Stan kept it short and to the points needing a discussion. The remainder of the evening was spent socializing around the group campfire and catching up on all things needing to be caught-up on. Eventually, the wood was gone, the fire coals dimming, and the night called out for sleepy time. Morning saw a new day and it was time to pack-up to head for home. Those with the longest rides packed up early and headed out for the 8-9 hours of riding to make it home. Others with shorter rides were able to take a more casual morning departure. In all, no mishaps to report and we all were able to make the journey safely.
Well, other than Stan getting his key FOB smashed by a semi thus leaving his stranded in the grocery store parking lot until he and Dale guessed until they found the code to his bike. Actually, Alan guessed it during a phone call. Yep, every time Stan wanted to use his bike he had to go through the process of punching in a code before it would come to life..
The important thing is that nobody had a mechanical issue, nor did anyone get hurt during the weekends activities..
So, it is with fond memories that we decided that Lost Lake is to be included on our list of places to revisit. For those members who were not able to make this run, it is hoped that you can experience this place in all its beauty the next time we make it out.

Portland M&G - Portland’s July M&G was hosted by Jeff B & attended by Jeff B, Marc B, & Blue B. It was a small group but and quality group none the less..
BC M&G - We are still looking for a member in BC to take the lead on this. Please let Stan know if you are willing do this.
Seattle’s M&G - Seattle’s July M&G was hosted by Dennis H and attended by Dale, Ron and Jin. This was our first departure for the Meet and Greet away from the Hill. Dinner was at Smarty Pants, the M&G was at Jules Maes. In the future if did it in Georgetown could do it at either place without moving. Great thing is that even if you can’t find street parking the parking won’t be the most expensive part of the evening!

August 3rd - Portland’s Meet & Greet at the Eagle from 7:00 to 8:00.
Stan will be hosting Portland’s August M&G. Stan has been a club member as well as a board member for several years. Stan is the current President and is always interested in talking about the club, motorcycles, & ways to improve the club. Feel free to swing by, meet Stan & offer up any ideas of how we can make the club better.
Dinner will either be at Tamale Boy Dekum at 5:30 or next door at Ranch PDX Woodlawn Pizzeria at 5:30. Tamale Boy is located at 1764 NE Dekum St, Portland, OR. 97211. Stan will decide where to go when he sees how busy the pizza place is upon arrival. Let him know you are coming, and he will text you which place to go to when he arrives.
There will be a short group ride from dinner to the Eagle.

Border Riders continues to advance our riding skills through the various clinics offered by Team Oregon. Registration is closed on the BRMC website for these classes but you might still be able to find an opening on the Team Oregon website. August 17th - Seattle Meet & Greet (Exciting New Locations)
Dale C is hosting Seattle’s August M&G. Dale is one of our long standing members, a prior board member, & as such has a vast amount of knowledge about the club. Stop by a try stump Dale with question about the club and learn about all our upcoming activities.
Both dinner & the actual M&G will be at Changes in Wallingford which is located at 2103 N. 45th St, Seattle, WA 98103. Plan on arriving around 6:00 for dinner, and he plans to wrap up around 8:00. Text Dale if you will be attending so he will know how many to prepare for.

August 19th - August 21st - The August Campout at Squamish Valley Campground near Squamish, BC.
Road Captain Dennis has been able to score us a beautiful campground near the bank of the Squamish River & amongst some large leaf trees for shade. It’s paved all the way to the campground with a short dirt road to the campsite. The Campsite is an easy 1:20 ride North of Vancouver, BC.
Phil R has signed up to be the Road Captain Buddy for this campout & has gone there to check things out. He is sampling local fare in his search for the just the right place for dinner Saturday night, & he is working with Dennis to put together some day rides options for Saturday. Phil is one of our newest Canadian Guest & is really showing his interest in the club. If he keeps this up, he will have multiple offers for a membership sponsor.
As we all know, it has been several years since we have been able to visit Canada and we are hoping to see all our Canadian Brothers at this campout. We have already received request for information from 6 possible Canadian Guest so this is looking like it will be a well attended event.
For the US people riding into Canada, please keep in mind you need to get the App “ArriveCAN” set up an account, & make an appointment at least 72 hours before trying to cross the border into Canada.

By-Laws Update
We have established a new By-Laws Committee to investigate the idea of a new category for current members that are not required to ride. The intent for this new committee is to address the issue of valued members, who for personal reasons are thinking about, or have stopped riding yet want to continue to be an active, contributing member with all the same rights, privileges and responsibilities of any other active member.
This new committee is made up of Jeff B, Tom C, Richard A, & Blue B. Good luck gents. I look forward to seeing what you come up with.

July Lost Lake run story 2022
After Saturday’s breakfast at the Bonaparte Lake Resort, 5 of us headed out for a big loop around the area, taking a few hours and about 100 miles. Primary target was the ghost town of Bodie, conveniently located along-side the road. Led by Don W who somehow knew where to go in this maze of twisty roads winding through the backcountry, we managed to stay on solid pavement the whole way, barring consideration for various potholes and ruts common in the area.

Bodie located at the mouth of Bodie Creek in Okanogan County WA came to be in 1896 with the discovery of gold in the area. From 1902 until 1911 the mines were owned by the Bodie Mining Company, backed by the Wrigley brothers of chewing gum fame. The mine was operated until around 1917 and then remained idle with intermittent production until Government Order L-208 closed non-essential industries during WWII.
The site was occupied in early 1888, two years after a couple of guys discovered the lucrative area which became Republic's Knob Hill Mine, high quality ore was extracted, milled and processed right in Bodie until the falling gold prices closed the township's mine and emptied its buildings in 1934, at which time the town had functionally relocated to the Bodie Mining Camp. An estimated US$ 1.2 million in gold was recovered, and it's said that Bodie Creek still runs color. There is only one intact structure remaining of the original "Old Bodie", a small two-story house converted to a storage building. The largest, most visible structure still vertical in what is now Bodie, is often cited as a schoolhouse which doubled as a saloon.
After a nice stop to photograph and explore the site, we mounted our steeds and did a nice uninterrupted ride to the small town of Republic. There, we temporally separated into two groups with Dale & Todd headed to a store to find pants and bathing suit, and Don & Dave to visit the historical society and learn a bit about the area. Andrew, in the meantime, waited in the cool shade of a park across the street next to the bikes.
Republic was founded by gold prospectors in the late 19th century. Mining claims were first made in 1896 after the northern half of the Colville Indian Reservation was vacated on a few weeks earlier that year. The resulting Republic Mine eventually became the highest producer of gold in the county. The process was nasty as after multi-ton mills crushed the mined rock, minerals, and metal (notably gold), mercury plate amalgamation and cyanide leaching were done to extract the gold. Lovely.
After a refreshing break, it was still a hot day so we were all good to get back on the bikes and get some wind blowing around us. Twisting and winding another 30 miles or so, we made it back to the campground to enjoy the rest of the day, much of which was in the coolness of the relatively warm lake.

July 15th, 2022: To
I boarded the 7:55 Kingston ferry to Edmonds. I was the first on with two other motorcycles following. I was securing my bike when one of the motorcyclists, Robert began chatting with me. He was on his way to the office and I was on my way to Lost Lake outside of Tonkaset. He had never heard of my destination, and I had never heard of his business. We were on square footing. We left the car deck, I made my way up one side of the ship while he made his way up the other. A Pacific Northwest effort to end the conversation.
After consuming a sausage and egg biscuit and banana for breakfast, I made my way back to my bike. I checked the straps holding my bags, plugged in my Garmin and pulled up the route for the day. Robert began prepping his motorcycle, I looked up and gave him a nod of recognition, he smiled and gave the same.
"So..." He said, "The Border Riders, What's that about? Is that your club?"
Not being one to hide, I smiled a crooked smile and looked up from the the GPS. I locked eyes with Robert and replied "We are one of the oldest gay active motorcycle clubs in the United States and Canada. We have been around since 1969 and put on monthly campouts during the summer, and day rides year round."
I watched as it sank in. His eye twitched and a slight spasm or confusion then realization betrayed his internal conversation. After a moment that felt too long Robert twisted his gaze from mine as he looked down with a constipated grimace. "Oh... That's... uh, that's great... um, wow... that's um... great!"
July 17th, 2022: From
I pulled in to Hank's Mini Market and gas station on the eastern edge of Twisp. The station was packed with cars as I pulled in line. I heard an electric window roll down and a woman began yelling "Excuse me... hey motorcycle man... excuse me!" I turned and the woman instantly began sharing her gas station woes. She had forgotten which side her fuel tank was located and would I mind trading places with her so that she would be on the correct side. "Sure..." I said "why not"
She backed up and I pulled my bike over and we trades places without incident.
"Oh!" She said "Border Riders! Are you part of border protection?"
I smiled, shook my head, and said "No."
"Do you go to Canada a lot?" She asked.
"When I can" I said.
"I live in Danville" She said. "Do you ever cross in Danville?"
"Sometimes" I lied.
By this time I was off the bike, filling my tank.
"Do you just ride the border?" She asked.
"I ride everywhere." I replied.
As I stopped for traffic leaving the gas station, I turned to look at the the woman who was now out of her car. Her eye caught mine and she yelled "Enjoy your adventure!"
I waved as I rode off.
July 17th, 2022: Then
I crossed the Methow River Bridge and entered stopped traffic on Riverside Ave. before the 4-way stop in Winthrop. It was slow moving but feathering the clutch, steady on the throttle, and using the back brake to control speed, I managed to slowly keep with the pace of the automatic transmissions I was following. I heard a rumble and the white soul sounds of Hall and Oats played too loud. I turned and looked to my right as the front wheel of a FatBoy cruiser came dangerously close to the bumper of the SUV in front of me. A man, somewhere in his 70's, in red shorts, a tank top, and a helmet too small to be legal sporadically rumbled next to me. He had ridden up the opposite lane and rode in to my space. An arrogant effort to bypass traffic brought on by his inability to slowly maneuver his machine. He grabbed a fistful of throttle, over raving his engine, and let out the clutch. His bike jerked forward and he slammed on the rear brake.
"...Oh Woah-0h here she comes..." and a couple of too close calls and I turned to him, to see his face. He smiled at me.
I shook my head in disapproval as I turned to face forward.
He backed off.

Gear Store
The Gear Store is closed until the 2023 Banquet. We are taking this opportunity to seek new items to spruce up the gear store. If you know of any gear we once had that you’d like to see us bring back, or new items you’d like to see us make available, contact our VP. Chris would love some suggestions.
PDX/SEA Annual Hook-up Ride
Rescheduled for Saturday 8/6/2022
The Road Captain & the leaders of the Portland & Seattle August Day Rides have decided to make the Hook-up ride normally done in May, the August Day-Ride.
Given the elevation of Mt Saint Helen, it was decided this ride should be done in a summer month due to the chance of better weather.
We hope you will agree and decide to join us for this Months Day Ride. It is the only day-ride we do, where Seattle & Oregon converge.
It’s a great opportunity to see everyone. Specially if you struggle to come to a campout.
SEATTLE
For those wanting to ride to Toledo as a group form the north we will meet at Unique Bakery in Tacoma (925 Market St) for coffee and pastries at 8:00am. Kickstands up at 8:30am with enough gas to get to Toledo. We will not be taking the I-5 direct route. The route we're headed is a little over 100 miles of back roads, the kind of back roads you want to be on. We’ll meet up with the southern boys at Donna’s Place - 112 Ramsey Way, Toledo at 11:30 for lunch. After lunch we will ride with the Portland contingent up the mountain and back down to where we say our good-byes and then I-5 back to our respective homes. Be prepared for a full day!
If you want to kick it down I-5, you are welcome to, but that's your bag of boredom.
Here's the main plan if you would like to follow along at home:
We'll take the 11th street bridge through the industrial wastelands of Tacoma. We'll cut up Portland Ave to the Emerald Queen Casino and make our way to Pioneer Way. This will take us through the once farmland, now tract homes of the hamlet of Puyallup.
We won't stop until we get to Valley Ave/162. We'll take 162 through a list of towns you have never heard of until we hit Highway 7 just outside of Elbe.
We'll take Highway 7 to Morton and cut over on Main Ave/508. This will bypass the majority of highway 12. Once at Silver Creek, we'll cut over to Salkum on 12 and head down Fuller Road. This will take us to Jackson Highway and eventually Toledo.
This should be a fun ride and take 2-3 hours to complete. Make sure you are gassed up and good to go. We won't be stopping for food or gas once underway. To paraphrase the Beastie Boys "No Sleep Till Toledo"
PORTLAND
On Saturday May 7th, Portland area riders will meet at Bernstein’s Bagels - 816 N Russell St, Portland, OR 97227 at 8:30 for breakfast. For those not able to attend this event, you are still welcome to join us for breakfast.
There will be a 5-minute briefing about group riding before we leave. Please be present as I will introduce some material that will likely be new to everyone. KSU will be 9:15.
We will cross the Willamette on the I-405 bridge and begin our ride north.
We will ride OR-30 to Longview, WA (53 miles & 1 hour).
From Longview we will ride WA-411 to Vader, WA (34 miles & 0:30).
Will ride past Vader, taking WA-506 to I-5, to Toledo Vader Rd, and onto Toledo, WA (12 miles & 0:15).
The pace for this ride will be speed to speed + 5 with maybe a little play time.
We will meet up with Seattle at Donna’s Place – 112 Ramsey Way, Toledo, WA 98591 at 11:30.
The totals for this leg of the journey will be about 90 miles & about 2 hours. You should arrive to Bernstein’s Bagels with enough fuel & be ready to leave with enough bladder space such that you can do this 2-hour ride without stopping. If I can find a place along the way to take a quick pee break, I will, but I make no promises.
As One Group
We will take a lunch break (about 90 minutes) at Donna’s Place before riding WA-405 up to the Mt Saint National Volcanic Monument (50 miles & 1:00 Hour). We will ride as one group up the mountain after we refuel in Toledo. You should fill up as this will be the only fuel stop for the day. KSU will be between 12:30 and 1:00.
Once we get done looking around Mt Saint Helen, we will ride back down the mountain as 1 group until the Road Captain finds a suitable place for us to take a break and say our goodbyes. From here, we will be on our own to get home. Some will break into smaller groups while others will fly solo. It’ll be an individual choice. The I-5 direct route to or from Toledo is about 1 hour and 72 miles. Stan’s pace for the ride home will be Speed to Speed + 10, most of the time. 😊
I guesstimate the ETA back to your homes will be between 5:00 & 6:00. This will be a long day for some riders so please be well rested and arrive prepared with snacks, water & whatever else you might need for a full day.

2022 August Campout
The Details
With Covid the BC group sites have been partitioned into multiple “Family Sites” so unable to book group sites. The site is a private campground and caters more to trailers an motorhomes. Regardless, it will be a good time to get together with our Canadian brothers and isn’t too far up into BC. Register Today!
2022 Advanced Motorcycle Training
Our advanced motorcycle training classes began in July. A dozen of us took the Advanced Braking Clinic & the Road Rider Tactics. There was some nervous energy when we go to the range but that subsided soon enough. Everyone had a good time and we all walked away better riders.
We will continue on with the Cornering Clinic and the Advanced Rider Training on August 15th. These 2 classes are the ones that allow us to ride our bikes on the go-cart track. We learn how to line up multiple corners, push the limits of our skills, & the bikes capabilities in a safe and supportive environment.
The last classes for the year will be on October 1st & 2nd. If you are in the Portland area that weekend, feel free to stop by and cheer us on as we master the various challenges of “The Motorcycle Rodeo”.

From the Handlebars of the President
I think I might have overbooked my personal life this summer. Along with all the club activities, motorcycle classes, a 4-day wedding (not ours), it’s my 60th birthday. To celebrate, I am going on a 2-week ride. I will ride through OR, NV, UT, AZ, CO, WY, MT, & WA. I will be riding many of my favorite roads, checking off a couple yet-to-ride bucket list roads, revisiting some of my favorite Points-of-Interest, & stopping at some of my favorite restaurants, all from prior rides.
Eat your heart out Richard A. I’m going to Paisley, OR for BBQ, Missoula for BBQ, Bozeman for cinnamon rolls, WY for Steak, I’ve got 4 food stops in CO, Nedra’s in UT, & BBQ in Winnemucca, NV. I am also hoping to find a new favorite in AZ for some Navajo food & I’m just getting started. Yep, I think my diet will get off-track on this ride but Walter can’t wait.
Unfortunately, Alan made plans to go to Burning-Man with Chris L before I decided to do this ride, and Alan cannot do both.. I thought, WTH, I’ll go solo. I enjoy solo rides although I’ve never done one this long. I can go as fast as I want, as slow as I want (hehe), ride as long as I want, pee when I want, eat when I want, tour what I want, what can go wrong?
Then Buck heard about my trip and asked if he could join me. Buck and my riding styles are almost identical, he agreed to my plans of spontaneity, overindulgence, & many U-Turns just for the hell of it. I always enjoy his company & I look forward to his companionship on my 60th Birthday Ride.
I will try to remember to take photos, for the newsletter but don’t get your hopes up to high. I never seem to remember to take pictures.
I will see everyone at the August campout up in Canada. I am looking forward to seeing my Canadian Brothers & Guests.

I will be MIA for a couple months as I prepare for my trip to Burning Man. If I can get my Honey-Do-List caught before the August Campout, I will make it. If not, I will look forward to seeing everyone at the September Campout.
Meanwhile, I hope everyone stays safe and are enjoying the summer.
Road Captain Rumblings
Whenever I book a campground that isn’t on our list of favorites I am always concerned - will they hang me from the nearest tree or is it one to add to the list? The feedback was impressive - the 3,000 foot gain from Tonasket makes for comfortable summer temperatures and the riding in the area is fantastic. I wish I could have been on 2 wheels for the trip rather than 4 wheels.
August is another new one as BC Parks aren’t accepting group reservations due to Covid. Hopefully next year that will change. We’ll see if this site works out for us.
I’m working on the plans for next year’s trips, will keep everyone informed as reservations are confirmed.

Not much to report for the August newsletter. I hope to make it to the August campout as I want to see all my Canadian Brothers and I hear we will have an impressive number of Canadian Guest at this event.

In Memoriam
John Mc L
A page has turned, and a chapter has closed in the book we all are writing, called 'The Border Riders Motorcycle Club'. John Mc L transitioned into the Great Mystery peacefully, at home as he wanted, on Monday, July 25, 2022. He was born July 6, 1928 and had seen 94 years of adventures, many of them involving motorcycles and the Border Riders Motorcycle Club, as a founding member. His enthusiasm and perseverance helped the Club survive through various ebbs and flows of membership, and continues into the future as the fabric upon which the tapestry that is the Club is woven. We all have benefitted, and will continue to benefit as the Club moves into the future.
Jim O
Do you remember Jim O? He and Wyatt (Ninja Bob) got married in Canada, and lived in the interior of BC on a ranch for some years. Jim passed away last Friday. They had moved to Nova Scotia where Randy Harris moved. Jim passed away from a sudden heart attack. Wyatt went to walk the dogs and when he came back Jim was on the floor, he was 60.

Monthly Meet & Greets
BRMC members will be available for interested individuals to meet and learn more about the club and how to get involved. For locations and times, check out the following list of times & location. Watch our FB for last minutes details pr changes.
Portland: Meet & Greet - 1st Wednesday of the month, 7 pm at The Portland Eagle.
Vancouver BC Meet & Greet (tentative - Watch FB) - 2nd Wednesday of the month. 4 to 6 pm at The Met Hotel, New Westminster.
Seattle: Meet & Greet - 3rd Wednesday of the month, 7 pm at The Cuff or on the road. Watch then newsletter, website or Facebook for exact location.
Member & Guest Day-Rides
In addition to the club's monthly M&Gs, local rides frequently happen on the 1st Saturday of every month. Additionally, members & guest going on an impromptu day-ride, or to some other activity, will post their plans on our FB page so others can tag along. Again, watch our FB page for last minutes details or changes.
