Welcome

Border Riders Motorcycle Club (BRMC) is an organized group of guys who like to ride and camp. Our membership spans the Pacific Northwest, with the greatest participation in Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver B.C.  We have one of the largest memberships for gay clubs in North America. We welcome like-minded guests to come meet us at our monthly Meet & Greets and to join us at one of our club events and our local activities.

Check out our website. We are very proud of it. www.borderriders.com

May Meeting Recap

Finally, and at long last, the beginning of the riding season here in the Pacific Northwest has gotten off to a fantastic start with the Border Riders Motorcycle Club kicking it off with our annual Victoria Day campout.  Held at our traditional site at Pine Flats campground along the Mad River in the Wenatchee National Forest, this tucked-away site is about 10 miles up into the forest from the small town of Entiat.  It’s a beautiful location with towering pines, new spring flowers, ferns, and graced with the raging river alongside the area.

35 members and guests attended this year, showing up as early as Thursday and staying thru Monday.  The weather was not as horrible as it could have been, seeing only some rain for the first couple of days and a bit of cold nights dotting otherwise pleasantly warm days and long periods of dryness.

For the early arrivals, the first order of business is to setup camp.  This is a major operation as all the gear stored in a town locker for the event must be loaded onto a truck and hauled to the site.  In the hopes of saving some money, the guys decided to use their pickups and a hauling trailer.  This took a couple of trips into town to get all the gear.  Once unloaded, teams of people start to set up the tents for the kitchen and food tables, kitchen shelves and grills, and tables and chairs.  It’s exhausting.

With the kitchen setup, next on the list of chores is the very important shopping spree where enough food and supplies for everyone is loaded into shopping carts all the way back in the city of Wenatchee.  As tradition has it, steak is the main course for the Saturday night dinner.  Combined with breakfast and dinners for other mornings and nights, a ton of food is hauled back to camp and carefully stored in containers to keep them cold and safe for when they get consumed.

One of the last major chores is to get the wood for the campfire.  In the past, this was delivered to us by locals, but this year it was decided to go out, find it, and bring it back ourselves.  Yeah, we’re talking a cord of wood, so a bit of a load.  As it were, finding a local supplier was not happening.  By the time a supply was located, the drive out there was 1.5 hours… one way!  So, maybe try not to have to do this next time.

With all the major setup and chores behind us, it was time to chill and relax in this beautiful setting.  Throughout the day, guys made their way to camp after their long journey, found a place to pitch the tent, and joined the group to catch up on all things everyone has been up to.  As in the past, we were lucky to secure all sites in the campground, so had the entire place to ourselves!  Nice to not have to be concerned about outsiders in the area.

With the campfire started and pretty much running for the duration of the event, eating is always a major highlight of the day.  Kitchen crews were assigned for breakfast and dinner shifts to prep, cook, serve, and clean.  It’s a coordinated effort that keeps everyone at camp well fed and happy.   Menus were different each time, and included burgers & brats, steaks, tators, breakfast burritos, and all the fix’ns to go around.

During the day, guys headed out to parts unknown or just hung around the camp and chilled.  Some of us headed up Lake Chelan for the 55-mile ferry ride (each way) to Stehekin.  A highlight was to see some big horn sheep hanging out on a rock by the lake shore.  Others explored roads in the area, hiked up the river trail, or jumped on the bikes to head out to scenic sites in the greater area.  After dinner, nights see us gathered around the campfire for endless chatting about all things.  This goes on into the wee hours when the last stragglers hit the sack and calls it a day.

By Sunday, about half the guys packed up and headed for home.  Partial teardown of the tents and gear begins and is stage for later loading back to the storage facility.  For the 15 or so guys staying until Monday, it’s a magical night full of good memories and a sense of peacefulness tucked away in this amazing forest.

Monday morning is bustling again with finally tear down and packing of all the gear.  It took another couple of trips to get it all back into the storage locker in Entiat.  But with that, everyone had parted to homes far and wide.  For some of us, it’s a 6, 7, and 8 hour drive back home.  A long day on the road, but well worth it for another fantastic weekend with the club.

Building Character

by Todd M

My grandparents had a laurel bush that overhung the blacktop of their driveway. When I was five years old, I loved climbing it. The branches would sway with my slight weight creating something frightening and thrilling. A sensation I've always been drawn to. The last time I climbed that bush, my sister and cousin were standing on the blacktop looking up at me, I can still remember the smell of the green leaves crushing under my hands and the sound of the branches as they groaned in protest. The sudden feeling of weightlessness was surprising as the supporting branch gave way and I plummeted to the blacktop chin first. My sister and cousin pointed and laughed as the shock wore off and the tears began to stream down my face, past my screaming mouth, to mix with the blood pooling around my chin. My grandfather came from the garage, stood over me, and placed his work gloved hands on his hips. His words of wisdom, though harsh for a five year old, I still find myself repeating to this day. "Shake it off, kid... It builds character."

The Saturday morning of the Victoria Day Run, after helping prepare breakfast and clean the kitchen, I found myself sitting in front of the dying fire as the day warmed, having a conversation with Tom C. I'm not sure what we were discussing, but it was a fluid conversation that felt calm and engaging. I heard an engine and looked up to see Dennis H. as he rode out of Pine Flats and realized I missed my opportunity to join in his day ride. The prospect of sitting the out the day wasn't an unpleasant one. I had been working since 10:45 Thursday morning helping to set up camp and a day of nothing held an attrition.

Tom said "We're going on an adventure ride, you're welcome to come with." I smiled and ran to my bike, put on my leathers and helmet to join Tom C, Chris T, and Larry B. We rode out of camp toward Ardenvior and turned left on to 19 where the Entiat and Mad rivers meet. We road up a gravel road of steep inclines with brief plateaus, ending in switchbacks with shear cliff on each side. One going up, the other down. The road necessitated standing on the pegs to lower the center of gravity on the bike as tires spun for traction. This effort presented us with the spectacular views from the Steliko Lookout. The lookout was built in 1947 and sits at an elevation of 2,586 feet. After taking in the view we made out way down the hill and continued to Swakane Canyon.

Swakane Canyon road follows Swakane Creek before it begins it's descent in to Cashmere. It is 16.2 miles long and begins on the Wenatchee side as a gravel road. The surface soon changes in to rutted and pitted hard packed dirt with embedded larger rocks. I managed well enough, standing up and picking my way around obstacles. Constantly thinking of my oil filter which is located to the rear of my engine casing. It's thin metal and one properly placed rock would eviscerate my bike like a sacrificial goat. My offering gaining me a ride home in the winged chariot of a tow truck.

Every few miles, Tom and Chris would stop and wait for me to catch up. Larry was behind me making sure I didn't forever disappear over a ledge. I felt challenged and capable of the literal road that lay before me. The first flames of the approaching hellscape appeared in the form of a hill that crested in to a pool of water. Had I climbed the hill on the left, I would have sunk my bike. I was lucky enough to climb on the right and quickly find the slight path that went around this water feature. On the other side, Tom and Chris were stopped. Larry followed in my tracks and also missed the deep dive to oblivion. We dismounted our bikes and took a moment to nervously laugh at the experience.

We got back on our bikes and rode off. The road was turning to a snotty clay from the rains the previous night. More and more pits filled with muddy water greeted me with no way around. A greasy feeling on the front tire as it sunk in to the submerged mud. A surprised relief as I rode through, water spraying around me as a bow of a boat cutting through a wave. This is when my grandfather's advice began to play in my head as a mantra. "...It builds character." Coming up a slight incline, my back tire gave way and the bike slid to the right. The feeling of weightlessness as the branches broke free. Three inches of snotty clay slid under my left foot as I fought to keep the 451 pounds of British machinery from going down. I managed to stay upright and rode it out. We all came to a stop. We got off our bikes. I with a feeling of terror and joy looked up the road, grinning.

The road that lay ahead was a hill of mud. A hill of slimy, snotty, greasy muck that was either going to be my doom or or my glory. A family of four on traditional dirt bikes came down the hill giving use a look and a wave of the knowing. We mounted our bikes and began to... ride? No, not ride... slide? Maybe that's a better word. We began to slide up the hill of greasy matrix. Riding behind Chris, I watched as he went down. I had to get off and help him lift his bike. I managed to find a slightly flat place and get my kickstand nestled on the only bit of solid soil on the entire hill. I didn't have to walk back to Chris, I simply stood in one place and slid to him. I helped him up with his bike and he managed to get on. I looked up in time to see Tom's bike go down. I sloshed my way up the hill and helped him as well.

I managed to get back to my bike and during my time spent helping my brothers, Larry had come up the hill and was now in front of me, stopped. I got on my bike as Tom and Chris rounded the corner at the top. I foolishly began to go before Larry was under way and he started to spin out in front of me. He gained traction and began to climb. I followed his tracks and with some slipping, made it to the top... "Shake it off, kid... It builds character." I told myself.

Rounding the corner revealed another hill. Chris' bike slid and he went down. I couldn't find a place to get my kickstand down to help him up, the mud was too thick, he was on his own. There was a man just before the summit who let us know that this is the end of up, but there's a corner over the crest and it is sloppy muddy downhill ride in to Cashmere. His only advice was stay to the left, if you slip, you'll go down, and if you go down, you could go over the cliff. Tom, Chris, and Larry walked up the the crest to take a look. I rode up to the crest as I knew there was no other way out. I looked at the tight curve and repeated my mantra.

Larry pointed to a previous track that some dirt bike had torn up and said "Follow this, it's the best traction you will get." I followed Larry's as I rounded the curve and saw the breath of the road that lay before me. Steep and muddy switchbacks that sloped at an impossible angle. I ground my right foot in to my back brake and pointed myself down the hill. Back wheel sliding I placed my left foot down to drag through the greasy muck, in an effort to keep the bike up. The bike slipped and slid as my heart kept jumping to my throat. "Shake it off, kid... It builds character."

I had come to the conclusion that I would go down. That I would not make it out of this experience unscarred. With each slip and slide of the bike, each time it almost kicked out from underneath me, my grandfather's mantra would kick in "Shake it off, kid... It builds character." As I slid through this madness, at some point I realized I was saying it out loud. "Shake it off, kid... It builds character." I looked up and realized Tom and Chris were passing me. "Shake it off, kid... It builds character." My bike almost slid out from under me. "Shake it off, kid... It builds character." My boot sunk in a slough of mud. "Shake it off, kid..." you know the rest.

When I saw it, I could barely believe it. The roadway, tarmac, human engineered terra firma. I began franticly repeating my mantra. A prayer to god or the devil or myself. Purely a human effort to control fate. 50 feet to go, "Shake it off, kid... It builds character." 40 feet "It builds character." 30 "builds character." 20 character.. 10 builds... don't go down... 5 character. I felt the jolt as the road turned to blacktop. I was jostled out of my focus as I began to laugh. The endorphins kicked in and I suddenly felt alive, calm, and completely in the moment. My grandfather's words burbled up through my fifty-two years of existence, an echo from the past to help me through this challenge.

"Shake it off, kid... It builds character."

May Day Rides

BC’s Day Ride

There was no BC day-ride in May

Seattle’s Day Ride

The May Day ride to meet up with Portland at Toledo was cancelled due to weather. 34 degrees and snowing at Mt St Helens isn’t riding conditions for motorcycles. The ride to meet up with Portland has been postponed until the first Saturday in July.

Portland’s Day Ride

The May Day-ride where we planned to meet up with Seattle in Toledo, WA was cancelled due to weather. This annual meet-up ride has been rescheduled for Saturday, July 2nd.

“PDX/SEA Annual Hook-up Ride Rescheduled for Saturday 7/2/22”

  • Seattle

For those wanting to ride to Toledo as a group form the north we will meet at Unique Bakery in Tacoma (925 Market St) for coffee and pastries at 8:45. Kickstands up at 9:15 with enough gas to get to Toledo. Route to Toledo will mostly be off I-5 with a choice of a route to the east or west of I-5. We’ll meet up with the southern boys at Donna’s Place - 112 Ramsey Way, Toledo at 11:30 for lunch. After lunch we will ride with the Portland contingent up the mountain and back down to where we say our good-byes and then I-5 back to our respective homes. Be prepared for a full day!

  • Portland

Portland area riders will meet at Bernstein’s Bagels - 816 N Russell St, Portland, OR 97227 at 8:30 for breakfast. For those not able to attend this event, you are still welcome to join us for breakfast.

There will be a 5-minute briefing about group riding before we leave. Please be present as I will introduce some material that will likely be new to everyone. KSU will be 9:15.

We will cross the Willamette on the I-405 bridge and begin our ride north.

We will ride OR-30 to Longview, WA (53 miles & 1 hour).

From Longview we will ride WA-411 to Vader, WA (34 miles & 0:30).

Will ride past Vader, taking WA-506 to I-5, to Toledo Vader Rd, and onto Toledo, WA (12 miles & 0:15).

The pace for this ride will be speed to speed + 5 with maybe a little play time.

We will meet up with Seattle at Donna’s Place – 112 Ramsey Way, Toledo, WA 98591 at 11:30.

The totals for this leg of the journey will be about 90 miles & about 2 hours. You should arrive to Bernstein’s Bagels with enough fuel & leave with enough bladder space that you can do this 2-hour ride without stopping. If I can find a place along the way to take a quick pee break, I will, but I make no promises.

We will take a lunch break (about 90 minutes) at Donna’s Place before riding WA-405 up to the Mt Saint National Volcanic Monument (50 miles & 1:00 Hour). KSU will be between 12:30 and 1:00. We will ride as one group up the mountain.

We will refuel before we leave Toledo, WA. You should fill up as this will be the only fuel stop for the day.

We will ride as 1 group back down the mountain until the Road Captain finds a suitable place for us to take a break and say our goodbyes. The Portland riders will head to I-5 & take I-5 south. We will continue heading south on I-205. I expect riders will break away as we near their individual exits. The remaining riders will take a final break and say our goodbyes in Oregon City. The journey from Mt Saint Helens to Oregon City is 2:00 saddle time & 88 miles. The pace for the ride home will be Speed to Speed + 10, most of the time. 😊

I guesstimate the ETA back to Oregon City will be between 5:00 & 6:00. This will be a long day for some riders so please be well rested and arrive prepared with snacks, water & whatever else you might need for a full day.

These convergence rides are a ton of fun and I can’t wait. If any Portland riders have any questions, comments, or concerns about this ride, please contact Stan at President@BorderRiders.com

2022 June Campout

The Details

For June the weekend trip is to Champoeg State Heritage Area, a first for the club. We were looking for someplace close to Portland to make it easy to participate in the Pride Parade on the Sunday of the run. The campsite is 11 miles southwest of Wilsonville, 7 miles southeast of Newberg.

One of the potential day rides will be going to the Pride Festival at Waterfront Park. It runs from noon until 6 PM. In the past we weren’t close enough for the Saturday activities and by the time we rode in the parade as the last group people didn’t want to stick around for the festival. Proof of vaccination will be required to enter the festival area.

Thanks in advance to Jeff Booth who is Road Captain Buddy for the June weekend. Jeff has already found a wonderful dinner option for Saturday night, Mexican Food, Yum. Jeff will also try garner some firewood for the campout, bringing water, snacks and be able to make recommendations for dinner on Friday night. Thank you for all your hard work and support Jeff B.

From the Handlebars of the President

Wow, I think that might have been my favorite VD weekend ever. It was wonderful watching all the laughter and seeing everybody rekindle old friendships, & making new ones. Three cheers to the VD Team (Chris, Alan, Dennis, Todd & Tom) for all their effort . Great job gents.

I think the changes to the menu were appreciated by the kitchen crew & I certainly have no complaints. Everything was delicious and the Ice Cream Saturday might was a nice surprise.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the June campout. Until then, ride safe & ride often.

Road Captain Rumblings

It’s amazing to be back to somewhat of a regular year starting with Victoria Day. We were expecting better weather for the weekend, while not a washout it was wet here and there. Temperatures were chilly especially when it cleared off at night and snow on the passes the night before the trip was a good indication of what to expect.

The highlight of the weekend for me was leading a little day ride - the same route that was led on by Dave Eckert on my very first Victoria Day. The route took us to Leavenworth, then a fun little road north to Plain, over to Lake Wenatchee, lunch at the 490’er Diner on Highway 2 and back to camp.

Looking forward to seeing everyone in June at Champoeg!

Please feel encouraged to reach out to me if you have any questions. Otherwise, stay safe, stay healthy and I look forward to seeing everyone soon.

Sincerely,

Alan H

Secretary Thoughts (Tom)

May was another busy month. Does it ever slow down, I think not.

It was wonderful to see everyone at the June Campout & I enjoyed myself very much.

The minutes from the May meeting have been posted in the members only section of our website. Please review them and be ready to approve, or not, at the June meeting.
