Welcome

Border Riders Motorcycle Club (BRMC) is an organized group of guys who like to ride and camp. Our membership spans the Pacific Northwest, with the greatest participation in Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver B.C.  We have one of the largest memberships of gay clubs in North America. We welcome like-minded guests to come meet us at our monthly Meet & Greets and to join us at one of our club events and our local activities.

Check out our website. We are very proud of it. www.borderriders.com

Monthly Recap (January) Seattle, Washington

On January 15th we gathered at the Cuff in Seattle for our Annual General Meeting (AGM). Social time began at 4:00. This year the Cuff provided a bar tender during our social time and as well as the meeting at the lower bar. This made it convenient for everyone to keep their drinks filled without having to wander up to the main bar.

The meeting was called to order at 5:00 and our guests were asked to leave and go up to the main bar. The meeting lasted about an hour and a half and included approval of the year-end financial reports for 2021 along with approval of the 2022 budget. Bylaws changes were discussed and tabled for additional work. Elections were held for 2022 board of directors as well as the three club guests that were sponsored for club membership. Dennis, as Road Captain, summarized the 2021 camp outs and went over proposed campsites for 2022.

After the meeting was adjourned, dinner was brought in by the Cuff. Three choices for dinner were offered by the Cuff. Everyone enjoyed additional social time while eating. Some made purchases from the gear store. By about 8:00 everyone had wandered away to their various destinations. Some to their hotel rooms, some to other venues, and yet others to their home.

The Schedule

Saturday July 9th & Sunday July 10th is the Road Riding Tactics in Albany, OR. I scheduled 2 of these classes because I expect them to fill up quickly. The RRT will run from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm on both Saturday & Sunday. The fee for this class will be $100. This is a new class for 2022 & replaces the RSP which many of us have already taken. The RRT is designed to help us work off the cobwebs from a long winter of limited to no riding. Visit the Team Oregon website for more information. http://team-oregon.org/advanced/riderskillspractice/

Alan & I are taking this class on Sunday so the group ride to this class will leave our house at 7:00am on Sunday the 10th.

Saturday July 9th & Sunday July 10th is also the Braking Clinic in Albany, OR. The BC will follow the RRT on both days & will run from 1:30 to 4:00 pm. The fee for this class will be $80. A group of us did this class in 2021 and agreed it was the single most important class for day-to-day riding that we have taken. Visit the Team Oregon website for more information. http://team-oregon.org/advanced/braking/

Alan & I are taking this class on Saturday the 9th.  The group ride to this class has not been figured out as it will likely include a late breakfast and a day ride on the way to the class. If you register for this class, Stan will make sure you are kept informed.

Monday August 15th is the Cornering Clinic at Pat’s Acres in Canby OR. The CC will run from 9:00 am to 11:30 am. The fee for this class is $80. This class enhances our ability to line up multiple corners for smoother transitions and faster cornering. Visit the Team Oregon website for more information. http://team-oregon.org/advanced/cornering/

The group ride to this class will leave Stan & Alan’s house at 8:00 am.

Monday August 15th is also the Advanced Riding Techniques at Pat’s Acres in Canby, OR. The ART will follow the CC & will run from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm. The fee for this class is $180. You will need to attend a 2-hour online classroom discussion before taking this class. This online class will be made available the week prior to the class as a webinar. The online class includes lessons on risk management, crash causation, judgment and impairments, braking, cornering, swerving, transitions, and traction. This class is a favorite among the guys who have taken these classes. Visit the Team Oregon website for more information. http://team-oregon.org/advanced/art/

Saturday October 1st is the Precision Maneuvering Clinic #1. The PMC-1 will run from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm. The fee for this class is $100. This class is all about slow speed cornering & U-Turns. It’s modeled after the Police Motorcycle Training Team Oregon offers various police agencies. Visit the Team Oregon website for more information. http://team-oregon.org/advanced/maneuvering/

The group ride to this class will leave Stan & Alan’s house at 9:00 am.

Sunday October 2nd is the Precision Maneuvering Clinic #2. The PMC-2 will run from 10:00 am to 2:30 pm. The fee for this class is $100. This class continues to build on the skills you learned in PMC-1. By the end of this class, you should realize a great deal of improvement with your slow speed cornering. From the Handlebars of the President

It was good to make it successfully through another AGM meeting. It was good to see members and guests though we only had a very few guests in attendance this year. The meeting was productive and went smoothly.

My term as president is quickly drawing to a close and I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow board members for serving this past year. It was nice to have a bit of normalcy this past year and have club events again. Though not a totally normal year it was a good year for the club non-the-less. I have enjoyed my 5 years as club president and the previous two years as treasurer. But I have been on the board for 7 of the 9 years that I have been a member and it is time to go back to being a member. As one member put it, “You’ve been club president for almost 1/10 of the life of the club!” To be honest, I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing but it is now about to become history. At the Anniversary banquet, I will be passing the torch to Stan as the new president.

As part of our annual membership renewal we did have two members indicate that they were resigning from the club. We will miss both of them and wish them the best but do understand that life brings changes with it. Both are welcome to join us as a guest at anytime.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the banquet and seeing what everyone brings for gear to swap. I hope that there is some good stuff there. In the meantime,

…… keep the shiny side up!

Road Captain Rumblings

Now is the time to get you vacation requests in for Fridays of run weekends so you’re not traveling after dark to get to the sites.

May 20-22, with additional days on Thursday and Monday. Annual Victoria Day at Pine Flats near Entiat, WA

Below is what was presented at the AGM for the rest of the season:

June 17 to 19 Champoeg State Heritage Area, near Wilsonville Approximately 30 miles from Portland, 200 miles from Seattle Good location for participating in Portland Pride Parade on Sunday Group site has vault toilets, showers and flush toilets in main campground Historical area from the mid 1800's Check out the air museum in McMinniville and the Spruce Goose which flew only once 75 years ago

Example day ride towards the coast:

July 15 to 17 Lost Lake Group Campground, Northwest of Tonasket. Approximately 443 miles from Portland, 290 miles from Seattle, 5 miles from Bonaparte Lake Resort for food

Group site and 18 regular sites, so fairly private. 2 flush toilets and 2 vault toilets, not sure what is most accessible to group site, no showers. For those that have long rides and choose not to do a day ride should be a good place to hang out for the day and cool off in the lake. Only electric boats allowed so should be quiet. Being July can expect warm temperatures, but given the elevation should cool off pretty good at night.

For those familiar with Butler Maps there are a lot of interesting roads in the area. For the adventure riders the forest roads way out number the paved roads, so plenty for those riders.

August 19-21 Squamish Valley Campground, south of Whistler, north of Squamish. Approximately 371 miles from Portland, 198 miles from Seattle 14 km to the closest food. Private campground, approximately 60 spots, group site is at one end near the beach along the Squamish River

Not going to say anything about day rides, roads are limited, but opportunities to go to Whistler or Lillooet

September 16-18, Maryhill State Park, along the Columbia River, south of Goldendale, across the river from Biggs Junction. Approximately 104 miles from Portland, 222 miles from Seattle. Restrooms with showers. Group site at west end of campground so not tight proximity to other campers. Day ride opportunities to Klickitat Canyon that missed out on in 2021 when we were in the area but didn’t do because of rain.

Treasurer’s Ramblings

It makes me sad that this will be my last post as Treasurer. I have enjoyed using my skills & knowledge of accounting to help the club tie up some loose ends & build a proper set of books.. I look forward to working with the new Treasurer Alan H and I am confident he will do a wonderful job. That said, onto my final report as treasurer.

All bills I am aware of have been paid. So, all our accounts are balanced, and are where I expect them to be. Briefly stated, “Piggy Bank Be Balanced”.

Please feel encouraged to reach out to me if you have any questions. Otherwise, stay safe, stay healthy and I look forward to seeing everyone soon.

Sincerely,

Stan C

Secretary Thoughts

Since this is my last newsletter report there are a number of members that I would like to acknowledge for helping me to do the job. First of all I want to thank Dan S. for pressuring me to initially run for the office of Secretary. I tend to be reserved, but Dan’s persistence force me out of my bubble. Thank you Jeff C. for being my proofreader. Having a proofreader for one’s work in writing was something that I always stressed with my students. We all make mistakes, but one should want their writing to be accurate and to look good. Thank you Dave J. for all the pictures you presented to make the newsletter interesting. You often provided pictures to illustrate what it was that I was writing about. Thank you Dennis H. for providing the lists of people who had signed up in advance of our meetings that I could use when taking roll. It was very helpful when calling out for guests who were present. This isn’t about my secretarial work, but thanks to Stan C. for his work in setting up riding classes. The classes that I took were very helpful in keeping up my riding skills. And finally, thank all of you who have been my riding buddies, and my brothers.
